Red Wing played about as well as it could Wednesday in the first day of the Class 2Agirls' golf meet at Ridges of Sand Creek in Jordan. But despite firing a 319, the Wingers are again staring up at a juggernaut. Four-time defending champion Minnewaska Area sits at 305 after the first day -- well in command and positioned to win its fifth consecutive state championship.
Minnewaska Area was paced by seniors Sarah Roering (1-under 71) and Allie Ostrander (1-over 73), who sit 1-2 in the individual chase heading into Thursday's final round. Ostrander, who has finished as the runner-up each of the past two years -- once to Sarah Roering and once to Emily Roering, Sarah's now-graduated sister -- said, "It's bittersweet and not fair having to try to beat one of your own teammates. ... But I'm hoping to squeeze (a championship) out tomorrow."
The boys are out on the course now and should be finishing up around 6:30 p.m.
