BOYS' SWIMMING Edina wins battle of defending state champs • EDINA 56, BLAKE/BRECK 43: Edina coach Art Downey extended an olive branch toward the defending Class 2A champion Hornets' opponent, offering to play host to a meet that was originally scheduled to take place at the Class 1A champion Bearstangs' smaller, older pool.

What's more, Downey, now in his 54th year as Edina coach, kept the four-lane scoring that is so common for small-school teams rather than go with six-lane scoring used by large-school teams. In effect, Downey was giving the Blake/Breck, the No. 2-ranked team in Class 1A, a sporting chance to upset the No. 1, Class 2A Hornets.

But, despite evening the odds, Edina went out and dominated Blake/Breck from the outset, winning six of the first eight races en route to the dual-meet victory Friday night.

Senior Drew Johnson won the 100-yard butterfly and swam the lead leg on the winning 200 freestyle relay team to lead Edina. Blake/Breck's Nathan Yueh and Edina's Chris Satterthwaite put on an individual duel that ended in a draw: Yueh beat Satterthwaite by .03 seconds to win the 200 freestyle, but Satterthwaite won their battle in the 500 freestyle, beating runner-up Yueh by a little more than three seconds. Blake/Breck's Mitch Foster had the best individual race of the meet, winning the 100 backstroke in a pool-record time of 52.84.

BOYs' BASKETBALL • EASTVIEW 56, EDEN PRAIRIE 51: The host Lightning jumped on the Eagles early and never let up, handing No. 1, Class 4A Eden Prairie its first loss of the season. Eastview took a 28-16 halftime lead and never trailed after that. Vinard Birch led Eastview with 19 points.

• BURNSVILLE 79, APPLE VALLEY 76 (2OT): Jack Ghizoni was clutch in the overtime periods, making five of six free throws for the Blaze in the extra sessions and offsetting a 33-point performance from Apple Valley eighth-grade phenom Tyus Jones. Jones' three-pointer at the end of the first overtime sent the game to a second OT.

• FOREST LAKE 63, ROSEVILLE 61: Zach Riedeman hit a jumper at the buzzer to give the Rangers the victory.
